Performance and Features

Size and fit — This collar and handheld controller are compact and lightweight. I haven’t had any issues with the profile of the collar or the device being a hindrance while attached to the dog’s neck. It fits snugly and has a slim profile.

Modes and stimulation — The Dog Device features a correction mode, a vibration mode, and an anti-bark mode. It has 10 levels of continuous or momentary stimulation, plus audible tone and vibration options. The handheld can support up to three PT 10 Dog Devices, all synced to a single handheld.

Range — The handheld is rated for ¾ of a mile, and I can confirm that with direct line of sight to your dog, it will reach that far. That distance diminishes as the charge on the handheld or the Dog Device gets low — and by low, I mean at least ¾ discharged.

Lights and indicators — The Dog Device has an LED indicator that flashes green to confirm it’s on, and two white LEDs that can be switched on or off from the handheld. These are bright and genuinely help you locate your dog in dark or nighttime conditions. The LED begins flashing red as the batteries run down.

Water resistance — The handheld is water rated to IPX7 and will even float. The Dog Device is water rated to 1 ATM (10 meters).

Overall Impressions

This is an excellent training collar for your dog. It has the features, power, and range to serve as your go-to training collar in any situation. Both the handheld and the Dog Device are extremely robust — they’re both tanks — and the water resistance only adds to that toughness. If you’re working retrievers in the water, you can have peace of mind that you won’t damage either piece of equipment.

I’ve been using the unit in the photo above for a couple of years now, and it has taken a beating with no issues whatsoever. One feature worth calling out: on the lowest power setting (1 on the dial), I can hold both prongs of the Dog Device in my hand and feel absolutely nothing. Setting #1 is what I’ve always used with Rocket. In the interest of full transparency, after a couple of years of hard use, I genuinely have no complaints. This is a tough, reliable collar, and I fully recommend it.

Who It’s For

This is a serious field collar. If you’re running retrievers or other hunting dogs — long distances, water work, or multiple dogs on a single handheld — it’s built for exactly that kind of work. If all you need is occasional recall help with a backyard family dog, this is more collar than you require, and a simpler unit will cost you less.

A Word on Usage

In reviewing an electronic training collar, I’d be remiss not to mention this clearly: you and your dog must have at least a basic obedience foundation before using this collar. Your dog should already understand positive and negative reinforcement, and you should too. I strongly recommend seeking guidance from a professional trainer before using this collar — or any e-collar — if you don’t have experience with these devices. I can’t stress this enough.
